Quantifying Biodiversity: Does It Matter What We Measure?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The pace and severity of the current extinction crisis is unprecedented, and there is a large disparity between the scale of the problem and the available recourses with which to mitigate it. Prioritising conservation efforts is therefore critical. With the extinction of species, we lose not only taxonomic diversity but also the ecosystem services they provide and the evolutionary history represented on the branches of the tree of life from which they subtend. How we value these alternative currencies of biodiversity might influence global conservation strategy and resource allocation. Fortunately, different currencies frequently covary closely, for example, maximising species richness will also do well at capturing evolutionary history. Nonetheless, differences exist at the margins, and these can have significant impact on ordering conservation priorities. Further, costs also vary and some currencies rank similar attributes differently (e.g., extinction risk versus latent risk). Conservation biologists must be prepared for the difficult choices that lie ahead.

Why Biodiversity Research needs Semantics
Biodiversity science investigates biological diversity on all levels and scales. There is strong evidence that biodiversity is declining at unprecedented rates and that this will have dire consequences for humankind. Consequently, there is a strong need for science to support political decision making in this area. Thus key questions of biodiversity science are: What is out there? Why is it the...
متن کاملIn defence of biodiversity
The concept of biodiversity has played a central role within conservation biology over the last thirty years. Precisely how it should be understood, however, is a matter of ongoing debate. In this paper we defend what we call a classic multidimensional conception of biodiversity. We begin by introducing two arguments for eliminating the concept of biodiversity from conservation biology, both of...
متن کاملDoes Management Really Matter? And If so, to Who?; Comment on “Management Matters: A Leverage Point for Health Systems Strengthening in Global Health”
The editorial is commendable and I agree with many of the points raised. Management is an important aspect of health system strengthening which is often overlooked. In order to build the capacity of management, we need to consider other factors such as, the environment within which managers work, their numbers, support systems and distribution. Effective leadership is an issue which cannot be o...

The development and evolution of any system–person, organization–nation depends on how the system succeeds to bridge the gap between what the system knows and what the system does (with the knowledge). We call this the gap between knowing and doing or the knowing-doing gap. If the system does not do what it knows, it will lose out in competition with other systems, its relative performance in...
متن کاملMistaking the Map for the Territory: What Society Does With Medicine; Comment on “Medicalisation and Overdiagnosis: What Society Does to Medicine”
Van Dijk et al describe how society’s influence on medicine drives both medicalisation and overdiagnosis, and allege that a major political and ethical concern regarding our increasingly interpreting the world through a biomedical lens is that it serves to individualise and depoliticize social problems. I argue that for medicalisation to serve this purpose, it would have to exclude the possibil...
